Probably
one of the most overlooked birds in the parrot world today are the
African Timneh Greys. Therefore when building our breeding stock
we decided to look more closely at them when choosing birds for our
Aviary. They are closely related to the African Congo Grey,
however in studying this magnificent parrot there were only a few
differences between the two. One we noticed, of course, is size
the Timnehs is about 9" long while the Congos are 13". The Timnehs are very intelligent and pick up talking ability easily. Their voices come out quite and sweet when they speak. As babies they love being cuddled and love on you almost like a human child hanging their head over your shoulder as if to burp them. They enjoy playing on gyms of all kinds as well as on floors with educational toys that challenge them. They are extremely inquisitive and will not hesitate to explore. They can begin talking as early as 10 weeks in our experience. Other differences are darker red/maroon tail and darker gray body with a soft silver underside. Their faces are a lighter color to almost white. In research we found that the Timnehs are not as shy and take changes more easily than their Congo cousins. They also bond more easily with the whole family rather than just one member. They're considered to be one of the more intelligent parrots; and have a very warm and sensitive disposition. I have been known to call these parrots when young, my gentle giants. Life expectancy is usually 35-50 years. Our first clutch of babies born to our Timneh Grey parents were very special to us. We had to pull the babies early, one at two days old and the other just a few hours old. Hand feeding was first done drop by drop the first few days, frequently with careful handling. Then on to hand taming which went very smoothly. They were terrific babies and gave us many months of enjoyment and was definitely a learning experience. Weaning took approximately four months. The first clutch of babies were a wonderful experience that we'll never forget. "Baby Timnehs". Is a short clip and shows these first two babies of that first clutch. Neither one have their eyes open yet and the oldest is two days, the other just a few hours old. Broadband required to view clips. You'll hear the first sounds that baby Timnehs make when they're hungry & ready to eat. It's amazing to view.. |
