Greater Patagonian

Patagonian parrots are now classified in the Conure family. They are the largest of the Conures, up to 19" long. There are a few subspecies of the greater Patagonian with size being the biggest difference. These parrots are cliff dwellers and can be found in the wild in central Chili in the foothills of the Andes moutains. Once they were classified in the Macaw family as Patagonian Arara. Arara meaning Macaw.

They are very playful, outgoing and bond well with owners, talk very clearly, learn quickly and use words in context. They can live up to 25 years if given a proper diet and kept healthy.

The're hard to find in the Pet trade & are listed as an endangered species, because of outside animal traders offerring to buy them from the natives of the area. They are often captured as babies and tamed for sale to these traders.

My "Sammo" has made an awesome pet.  He has often been ignored for a while and still stays well-mannered and tame.  When I leave home I tell the birds "See ya later" and Sammo always says "Bye-Bye".
