N A N D A Y

The Nanday is a member of the Conure family of  parrots.  They're predominantly green, with a black face & head.  They have a bluish throat & underbelly and wings that are wonderfully colored in blue & green with hints of red.  Nandays have bright red legs giving the appearance they have on red socks.  They're 12" to 15" with a life span of 20-30 years.

They can be taught to talk but don't usually have a large vocabulary. They make up for it by being very social birds & enjoy living in the home at the center of the family's activity. The larger the cage the better for these guys.  They have a wide & beautiful wingspan.  They need daily attention & handling, a normal trait for almost any parrot.  Enjoying a variety of toys & multiple perches in their cage, they will play and exercise.  The Nanday should be misted (or sprayed with a spray-bottle) frequently to help them with grooming/preening. (They really like it too.)

As young babies they have a habit of bobbing their heads up.n.down as if listening to music ..keeping rthym.  It's entertaining to see these youngsters "dancing".  Another behavior is how they'll puff up their head feathers, which are black and tend to make their head appear larger than it actually is, bobbing up.n.down all the while.  I've caught myself calling them the "Doobie Brothers" from all their bobbing antics.

When a clutch of chicks is about 5 weeks old they're very cute, sweet & cuddley.  During this adolesent stage it's important to handle them often & even play with them on the floor outside of their cage.  Playing like this helps them to properly socialize and be happy, and a better pet when they wean.

Nandays can be loud at times, if ignored, but as long as you are continuing daily interaction in & outside of the cage & using the "Up Up" command you'll enjoy having a very fun & loving addition to your home & family, for many years to come.
