Of
all the birds being presently bred, you're missing out on a lot if you
haven't encountered a Lorikeet. The lack of literature on this species
could be the reason they are not seen as often. Coming from New Guinea and Austraila these parrots in sizes that range from 9" to 14" at maturity. These species are certainly one of the most beautifully colored of all the bird families. Their colors are some of the most vivid in the bird world. One of the main differences in this species is their diet. Having a brush-tipped tongue which allows them to feed on nectar, pollen, plant buds, flowers and insects in the wild. Commercially available foods have now been formulated to be an effective diet supplemented with needs of fresh fruits like apples, oranges, bananas, papayas etc. They talk very well at an early age and are smart enough to be bilingual. Clownish and gymnastic abilities easily catch your attention and take your breath away. Don't be surprised if you find them laying on their backs sleeping or playing with even two toys at one time & juggling them in the air. They love the water and can be found diving in their water bowl like a seal swimming. They do not require handling as often as most other parrots to remain very tame, sweet, and lovable. We learned how to pottie-train our lories and know they make excellent loving, playful family pets. |
